Obituary

Sophie M. (Kida) Gudelski, 100, of Durham, beloved wife for 63 years of the late Alexander Gudelski died peacefully on Thursday May 24, 2012 at her home. She was born April 26, 1912 in Shenandoah, PA, the daughter of the late Frank and Mary (Wegrzyn) Kida. Sophie moved to Hartford, CT in 1927, resided in Meriden, CT for 64 years and the last 7 years of her life were spent at her home in Durham, CT. Before marriage she helped support her brothers and sisters by employment at the Hartford Colt Factory. Later Sophie worked side by side with her husband for many years at the family owned Quality Donut Bakery. Her hands were never idle, creating beautiful afghans, baby blankets, scarves, doilies and mittens for members of her family and her friends. Sophie started many Easter and Christmas traditions that will be carried on by her family. She was an active member of the Sacred Heart and Holy Rosary Societies, the Ladies Guild and Council of Catholic Women and PALS. Sophie was a loving, devoted and compassionate mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister and aunt. She leaves behind to cherish her memory, her children: John Gudelski and his wife Aleta of Durham, Joseph Gudelski and his wife Donna of Durham, Patricia Marks and her husband David of Cheshire and Trudy Lagace and her husband Bob of Durham; 15 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren, soon to be increased to 21; a sister Theresa Cowan of Somers; 2 brothers: Stanley Kida of Wethersfield and Anthony (Jack) Kida of Phoenix, AZ; sister-in-law Mary Kirchner; her daughter-in-law June Gudelski and many nieces, nephews and friends. She was predeceased by her son James Gudelski; her brothers: Walter, Jim, Joe and John Kida and her sisters: Catherine Kozma, Florence Tokare and a special Aunt Sister Bertrand. Sophie's family extends a special thank you to all those giving comfort, especially Middlesex Hospital Homecare, Dr. Karen McArthur and Dr. Otto Weis.
