Obituary

Richard Julius, 89, devoted husband of MaryAnne (DeSandre) Julius, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 9, 2025, with his loving family by his side.

Richard was born in Meriden, August 15, 1935, a son of the late Anthony Julius and Antoinette (Rich) Julius.

In addition to his adoring wife MaryAnne, he is survived by his 4 children: Richard Julius and his wife Loresa, Cindy Laurello and her partner Gary Wirth, Daniel Julius, and Sandra Julius; his 4 grandchildren: Eric Laurello and his wife Sarah, Josh Laurello, Aaron Julius, and Zachary Julius and his partner Ian Walsh; 3 great grandchildren: Helen Laurello, Teddy Laurello, and Lionel Walsh; his sister Linda Waller; several nieces and nephews, and his cherished grand-dog Jack, who brought him immense joy. He was predeceased by his brother Anthony Julius and his wife Lucille; his brother-in-law Howard Waller, and his cousin John Cello, with whom he shared a Saturday coffee tradition.

Known to family and friends as Rich, he was a U.S. Army veteran who later retired from his career with the State of Connecticut. He also dedicated time to the family business, where his hard work and commitment left a lasting impact.

To his grandchildren, he was affectionately called 'Pop-Pop,' a name that carried countless cherished memories.

His passion for woodworking was born from the countless hours spent at ARLJ Wood Products Company, the family business he shared alongside his parents and siblings. A self-taught jack-of-all-trades, he had a knack for creating and restoring anything that found its way to his workbench.

Rich found joy in his personal hobbies, including Friday night card games at the Eagle's Club in Meriden, where he joined the Italian gentlemen for hours of lively competition. He cherished annual family vacations to Old Orchard Beach, Maine, and never missed the chance to experience the excitement of Las Vegas.

Most evenings, Rich could be found immersed in newspapers and magazines, eagerly absorbing every bit of knowledge he could uncover. He loved sharing the interesting facts and financial wisdom he discovered, always leaving behind carefully chosen clippings on stocks, retirement funds, or the latest cars—ready for his grandchildren to explore during their visits.

He had a deep love for gardening, especially when it came to growing an abundance of tomatoes, which he happily shared with family and friends. His joy was unmatched when his two fig trees surprised him by bearing fruit far earlier than expected.

Later in life, Sunday afternoons were reserved for two of his favorite pastimes— the New York Yankees and NASCAR racing.

Rich shared 67 wonderful years with his beloved wife, MaryAnne, a partnership built on love and unwavering devotion. Their daily shopping trips were more than errands—they were cherished moments spent side by side, a simple yet meaningful ritual that reflected the deep bond they shared. Through every season of life, Rich and MaryAnne embraced the joy of companionship, always finding happiness in the little things together.

Above all, Rich was a humble and selfless man who never sought the spotlight, yet at a moment's notice, he would set aside his own needs to help anyone in need.

We extend our heartfelt appreciation to Diane Harris and her late husband, Harry whose kindness and generosity as neighbors went above and beyond.
