Dr. Richard Henry Groth, 95, of Meriden, died peacefully, Wednesday, January 22, 2025 at the Hospital of Central Connecticut, New Britain.
Richard was born in New Britain, October 14, 1929, a son of the late Henry and Nellie Emma (Otterbein) Groth. He received his B.S. degree from the Teachers College of Connecticut and his Ph.D. degree in organic chemistry from Ohio State University. Following a postdoctoral research fellowship at Duke University, North Carolina, Richard was employed at the University of Hartford. In 1970, he joined Central Connecticut State College as an associate professor of chemistry, later becoming a professor of chemistry and serving for nine years as chair of the Department of Chemistry. He was awarded the college's Distinguished Service Award and continued lecturing at Central Connecticut State University until 1999. Richard was also a consultant to Pratt & Whitney for 30 years and to the Connecticut State Police forensic science laboratory for 12 years.
With his wife, the late Joyce, Richard traveled extensively in the United States and abroad. In his retirement, he helped to raise his four granddaughters, worked at H&R Block, researched numismatics and genealogy, took frequent walks with his canine companion, Anubis, and generously shared his favorite chocolates with visitors.
Richard is survived by his sister, Shirley G. Pennala of Lyme; two daughters, Dr. Eileen Groth Lyon and her husband Dr. Gordon W. Lyon of Hamburg, NY, and Kathleen J. Marchetti and her husband Robert A. Marchetti of Meriden; four granddaughters, Emily K. Wozniak, Elizabeth A. Wozniak, Rebecca M. Wozniak, and Rachael B. Wozniak; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Dr. Joyce L. Groth, his grandson, James W. Lyon, his brothers Harold K. Groth, Roy A. Groth, and his sister Lucille Groth St. Clair.
His family will receive relatives and friends in the Meriden Memorial Funeral Home, 450 Broad St., Saturday, January 25, 2025, from 10 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. A funeral service will begin at 11:30 a.m. Interment in Walnut Grove Cemetery in Meriden will be private. In lieu of flowers, gifts in memory of Dr. Richard H. Groth may be sent to the Central Connecticut State University Foundation, 1615 Stanley Street, New Britain, CT. 06053.
