Obituary

Early Saturday morning January 14, 2017, just 15 days short of her 99th Birthday, Mary Ann Micowski, daughter of Stanley and Kathryn (Dabrowski) Koncki, passed away at home with her family caregivers at her bedside. Born on January 29th, 1918, Mary was a proud, lifelong Meriden resident, who attended Catholic School and Church, raised a family, worked and continued living in her hometown even after retiring. Mary was a devoted wife and mother. She was married to the late Alonzo W. Micowski for 45 years and together they raised "her three sons."

Throughout her life, Mary remained close to her eight sisters and brothers, the 'Koncki Clan,' who considered each other best friends as well. From their time together as kids growing up on South George Street, to sharing two of the three other floors in grandma's next house on Hicks Street, as they started their own families, the Koncki's have always exemplified strong family values and the close ties that bind while keeping their Polish heritage alive as they all continued to live and contribute to the Meriden Community. Saturday night setback games, summer concerts at Masonicare and Hubbard Park, New Year's Eve in the St. Stan's Crystal Ball Room, catching the early bird specials at the Fishtale down at the shore during Lent, and always, always celebrating each other's Birthdays and Anniversaries were "givens' with the Koncki family. Easter Sunday saw a steady stream of all the Koncki families visiting grandma all morning long for a traditional Polish breakfast and the yearly Easter Egg Hunt for the kids.

Personally, Mary was a fashionable dresser-on-a-budget who loved finding that special outfit on sale; and she never missed her weekly Saturday morning hair appointment with Rochelle at JCP!  But family always came first for Mary and her husband. For years they always found a way, and made the time, to attend all of their son's basketball and baseball games, most times splitting time among three games in three different towns. This was in addition to Church, School and community functions too. And then they started all over again by loyally attending their grandson's basketball and baseball games and school functions.

Like all her sisters, Mary was a great cook and baker. No measuring cup necessary here; Grandma taught all her daughters very well. Mary's cinnamon and Carmel nut coffee cake was always a quick seller at Church festivals and bake sales. The traditional Polish Christmas Eve Wigilia feast for at least 70 + was home prepared each year by all the Koncki sisters, brothers and their spouses, and remain legendary, continuing with the next generation that has now taken over. Throughout her life, Mary was an involved member of the St. Stanislaus Ladies Guild, the School PTA, RENEW and the Sunshine Club.

Mary is survived by her three sons: Michael and wife Linda of Higganum; Robert and wife Lynda of Meriden; and Walter and his fiancée Ivana Solsbery who lived and cared for her at the family home in Meriden. Mary also has four grandchildren, five great grandchildren and many loving nieces and nephews. She is survived by three brothers: Tony and wife Dorothy, Joe and wife Lois, and Stanley and wife Josephine Koncki.  Mary was predeceased by her four sisters: Genevieve Millsback; Helen McLaughlin; Francis Blessing; and Ann Larese. She was also predeceased by two brothers: Henry Koncki; and Walter Koncki (at birth).

The family would like to give a special thanks to Mary's physician of many years, Dr. Audrey Lefkowitz, the administrators and staff at Westfield Care & Rehab Center who nursed Mary back to health and home after she broke her hip in June 2015, and especially the sisters and nurses from Franciscan Hospice Care for their spirituality and caring which allowed our mother to die with dignity at home. "Mer" will be greatly missed but the memories of Mary, as with all the Koncki sisters and brothers, will remain forever among the Koncki and Micowski families.

Her funeral will be held on Wednesday January 18th at 10:30 a.m. from the Stempien Funeral Home, 450 Broad St., Meriden when the funeral cortege will proceed to St. Stanislaus Church for a Mass of Christian burial at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow in St. Stanislaus Cemetery.
