Julius F.
Awdziewicz Jr.
Jun 1, 1930 — Oct 21, 2024
Meriden
Julius "Jules" Awdziewicz Jr., beloved husband of Helen (Borek) Awdziewicz, father and grandfather, passed away peacefully, at the age of 94, Monday, October 21, 2024. Jules and his wife Helen shared 69 wonderful years of marriage.
Jules was born in Meriden, June 1, 1930, a son of Polish immigrants, Julius Awdziewicz Sr. and Adeline (Woronick) Awdziewicz. He resided in Meriden his entire life. Jules, a true patriot, enlisted in the Army National Guard during the Korean War. Afterwards, he was employed by the Meriden Police Department for over 30 years, retiring as Detective Lieutenant. A strong believer in higher education, Jules worked diligently as a student attending Central Connecticut State College in the evenings. He attained his college degree in 1972. The following year, he was selected to attend the F.B.I Academy in Quantico, Virginia (only the second Meriden law enforcement officer to receive this honor). He attended the academy for over three months, enrolled in rigorous course work.
After retiring from the Meriden Police Department, Jules continued work in law enforcement. He was employed as a Sheriff for New Haven County, working for the late High Sheriff, Henry Healy. He proceeded to work as a Sheriff for 20 years, ending an astonishing career in law enforcement, for a total of 50 years.
As a police officer, detective and sheriff, he dedicated his life in assisting and helping others, especially the less fortunate. Jules was past member of the Polish Knights, Elks and North Italian Home Club. For many years, he was involved in setback tournaments at the club on Thursday evenings with his good friend Lou Corte. Moreover, he was on the North Italian Home Club Scholarship Committee for 30 years. It would be remiss, if it was not mentioned his fondness for the Boston Red Sox, and his all-time favorite player, Carl Yastrzemski.
Jules graduated from St. Stanislaus Parochial School. As a lifetime devout Catholic, he served in various committees at St. Stanislaus Parish. He was a member of the St. Stanislaus (St. Faustina Parish) Finance Committee. For his endless work in the parish, he was awarded the St. Joseph Medal of Appreciation from the Archdiocese of Hartford, Archbishop Henry J. Mansell.
In addition to his wife Helen, Jules is survived by his children, Michael Awdziewicz of Middletown and Mashpee, MA., Thomas Awdziewicz (Carla) of Wallingford; his three grandchildren Jennifer (John) of Wallingford, Nathan (Florence) of Cumberland, ME and Alison (Travis) of Aurora, CO; his great grandchildren Levi and Nigel. He leaves two very special cousins, Francis Zygmont and Charlotte Lyons; also, three loving nieces, Jo-Anne Ross, Barbara Wheeler and Linda White. He was predeceased by three sisters, Albina Loiko, Phyllis Barlowski and Sally Miller.
The family expresses gratitude to staff members at MidState Medical Center, Apple-Rehab Coccomo, and Fresenius Kidney Care. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Jules can be made to St. Faustina Parish, 82 Akron St., Meriden, CT. 06450
The Awdziewicz family will receive relatives and friends at the Meriden Memorial Funeral Home, 450 Broad St., Friday, November 1, 2024, from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Saturday, November 2, in St. Stanislaus Church in Meriden.
