Obituary

Gilbert "Kimo" Detol, 63, died peacefully on May 3, 2012, surrounded by his family at Masonicare, after a 33 year battle with thyroid cancer. He was the husband of Patricia A. (Mikowski) Detol, his loving wife of 36 years. Born November 6, 1948 in Honolulu, Hawaii, he was the son of the late Feliciano and Margaret (Awong) Detol. Raised in Kaneohe, HI Kimo graduated in 1966 from Castle High School. He enlisted in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. Kimo was attached to the First of the 12th Airborne, proudly serving for 3 years. Upon returning from Vietnam in 1969, he became an apprentice in the Mason's Union and went on to become a journeyman mason. Kimo worked for several construction companies in Hawaii where he made many lasting friends. Kimo met his wife who was originally from Meriden in 1971. They married in 1976 and resided at Village West in Pearlridge, HI where they raised two beautiful children and where he was later employed as Resident Property Manager. Kimo loved the ocean and enjoyed surfing, fishing, family luaus, playing the ukulele and camping with relatives and friends. He moved to Meriden in 2001 and was employed with the Carabetta Management Company as a mason\ welder for the past 11 years. Kimo was a parishioner of St. Rose of Lima Church. Kimo loved to watch old western and martial art movies. He enjoyed cooking, traveling, listening to oldies music and dancing. Kimo had a big heart and always lent a helping hand. His warm contagious smile lit up a room. No matter the weather, for Kimo it was always "another beautiful day in CT!" He brought much happiness to his family, relatives, co-workers, friends and even acquaintances. Few words can describe the impact he had on people, always joking, smiling and laughing.
