Genevieve A. (Potrepka) Yara, 97, passed away on Friday September 28, 2018 at Apple Rehab Cocomo. She was the wife of the late Vincent M. Yara, her loving husband of 62 years.
Born on May 6, 1921 in Plantsville, she was the daughter of the late Konstanty and Stephania (Burka) Potrepka. Genevieve was a graduate of Lewis High School, Southington Class of 1939. She attended Russell Sage College in Troy, NY and the Albany Hospital School of Nursing. After college she worked as a lab technician at Pratt & Whitney during the War. Genevieve worked at the Styletex Company Store in Meriden for several years. She went back to nursing and was employed at the Meriden Wallingford Hospital from where she retired. Not quite ready for retirement, Genevieve decided to go back to work for the JC Penney Company for a few years. She was a member of the Meriden Senior Center, AARP and the Meriden Council of Catholic Women. Gen was a parishioner of St. Stanislaus Church and also a member of the St. Stanislaus Guild and the Sunshine Club. She enjoyed taking care of her home, tending to her flower beds and working on crossword puzzles and jigsaw puzzles. Genevieve completed hundreds of them with great patience.
Mrs. Yara is survived by her daughter Joan Geigle and her husband Dr. Kenneth Geigle of Wallingford; two sons: Thomas Yara of Miamisburg, OH, Philip Yara of Meriden; three grandchildren: Dr. Eric Geigle and his wife Dr. Tamika Brierley of West Hartford, Jennifer Williams and her husband Kenji of Dayton, OH, Angela Schicker and her husband Andrew of Chicago, IL; four great grandchildren: twins Kason and Kaz Williams, Jersey Williams all of Dayton, OH, Lena Genevieve Geigle of West Hartford; two sisters-in-law: Anne O'Connor of Louisiana, Gloria Potrepka of Plantsville and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sister Bernadine Potrepka and two brothers Frank Potrepka and Chester Potrepka, Sr.
Her funeral will be held on Tuesday October 2nd at 10:30 a.m. from the Stempien Funeral Home, 450 Broad St., Meriden when the funeral cortege will proceed to St. Stanislaus Church for a Mass of Christian burial at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow in St. Stanislaus Cemetery. Family and friends are invited to pay their respects on Tuesday morning October 2nd from 9:30 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. at the Stempien Funeral Home.
