Obituary

Beatrice M. Bernarda passed away on Tuesday June 30, 2015. She was the wife of the late Remo D. Bernarda. Born on May 31, 1923 in Meriden, she was the daughter of the late Raffaele and Assunta Macri. A highly educated woman, Beatrice received a Master's degree in Microbiology from Smith College and served as a bacteriologist for the government at Fort Detrick and the Meriden and Masonic Hospitals. Her final 30 years of service were spent as head Microbiologist and Assistant Chief Technologist at WWII Veteran's Memorial Hospital. Beatrice was very active upon her retirement; she taught English to Spanish speaking students, she was an avid dancer and she especially enjoyed spending time with her family. "Her brilliance was only surpassed by her love for her family and friends." She is survived by her sons: Bruce Bernarda and his wife Lynn and Keith Bernarda; three grandchildren: Beau, Bryce and Bliss Bernarda; a sister Italia Materas and several nieces and nephews. Beatrice was predeceased by four sisters: Olga Macri, Gloria Macri, Violet Bochinski, Catherine Peepers and her brother Jack Macri. Family and friends are invited to pay their respects on Tuesday morning July 7th from 9:00 a.m. until 10:00 a.m. and attend her funeral service at 10:00 a.m. at the Stempien Funeral Home, 450 Broad St., Meriden.
